Love the post. Now following. Hopefully you can stop by sometime over at possumhillfarms.com
Hi, I read through your instructions and am confused. Each box has a screen bottom with the exception of the top hinged box. When you put food in the top wouldn't the screen of the first box keep the food form getting to the bottom third box?
The worms migrate up though the mesh towards the food, there is a short paragraph in the picture that explains this. Click on show larger pic and read it.
You put on one box at a time when it is full you put on another one .
Use one box to start, and add others as the first one fills. The worms can't levitate! But when the first is about full and you add the second box and put the kitchen scraps in it, they will move up. When the second box is half full or thereabouts, remove the bottom box, shake the castings like sifting flour and watch for the few remaining worms. Put them in the next box up, which is now the bottom box. I think that the third box may be overkill, but it never hurts to have extra! I'll probably make mine a little larger than this; it seems small to me.
How do the boxes interlock?
There are a lot of ways to interlock them. For me having the tools, I would use a router to notch the inside of the top of each box, and then notch the outside of the bottom of each. This requires a bit with a bearing and the right cut depth to be just over half the thickness of your wood. I'm sure there is an easier way, but I like things over done sometimes.
Are the dimensions given the overall dimensions or are they the dimensions of each box. In other words, how high is each side of the individual boxes?
How much would one of these cost? Do you build and sell these, if not where can I purchase one?
